Chromebooks & Technology

Technology at Portola High school

The Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) authorizes students to use technology owned or otherwise provided by IUSD as necessary for instructional purposes. The use of district technology is a privilege permitted at the district's discretion and is subject to the conditions and restrictions set forth in applicable Board Policies, Administrative Regulations, applicable school policies and acceptable use policies (AUP). See here for the district's AUP, and here for Portola's responsible use policy.

Chromebooks

The most prominent technology resource available to all learners at Portola are their school devices. Each student has a choice to either use their own laptop (for example, a MacBook), or a Chromebook loaned to them by the school. To learn more about Portola's 1 to 1 device program, please see here.

Once a learner is enrolled in Portola, they are invited to visit the Learning Commons to checkout a school Chromebook and a charger. Learners are instructed to keep these devices the entire time they are at Portola. If they leave the school, or graduate, then the device and its charger will need to be returned to the Learning Commons in good condition before exiting the school.

When a learner checks out a Chromebook, they are told about insurance for it. To learn about the IUSD insurance program, MySchoolBucks, please see here.

Learners are also provided their username and temporary password during their initial visit to the Learning Commons. All learners are encouraged to change their password after they first login at this link here.

Chromebook troubleshooting guides can be located on the right of this page.

Further questions about Chromebooks may be routed to helpdesk@iusd.org.

Logins

It can be frustrating if you can't login to your device, or to class apps! See below for some guidance. All icons are hyperlinked to tutorials, or to login pages.

To login to your Chromebook use the school username and password given to you by the Learning Commons staff, Counseling, or your Advisor.

Password Icon

On your first day of school at Portola please reset your password to help keep your account safe. See here for instructions.

Image
Aeries Icon

Aeries is the place where you can check your class schedule and grades. Most learners login with Google, but if you login with an email address, it needs to be a personal one.

Image
Instructure Icon

Canvas has to be accessed from this exact url. You can't do a web search for a Canvas login page because it will take you to a different website that won't let you login.

Image
Office Icon

Every Portola learner has a school email address! An important thing to note is that your personal email will not be checkable while on the school WiFi, but your school email will be. Follow this tutorial for how to login to your school email here.

Image
YouTube Icon

Learners may access YouTube after they complete a digital citizenship training. Please watch the video, then complete the quiz.

Image
Google Classroom Icon

Google Classroom is designed to be used with a join code. Your teachers will give you these codes to join their classes when you start their class.

Image
Destiny Discover Icon

Destiny Discover is a place to search what books the Learning Commons has, and for you to login and see what books you have checked out to you. This is especially useful for seeing a list of textbooks checked out to you.

Various Apps Icon

Further logins are typically class specific. For example, the engineering classes use Fusion 360 and can supply the login info for that by talking with the teacher.

Questions about logins can be asked in the Learning Commons, or emailed to HelpDesk@iusd.org.

equipment

Equipment varies from class to class. For example, the Engineering Pathway has it's own design lab with things like wood working and 3D printers. Whereas the Business Pathway has special heat presses for putting designs onto t-shirts. Then there's the Video Pathway with powerful Mac computers and myriads of professional level camera equipment.

As far as equipment available to all learners regardless of the classes they are in, the Innovation Lab houses these materials. By having equipment available to all learners this offers a high level of equity and provides unique opportunities to explore design ideas and to extend classroom learning.
