In-line with IUSD's Strategic Initiatives, Portola strives to create innovative and technology-rich learning environments for students. The goal of this work is to provide a collaborative work space inside of a school or library for hands-on learning, exploring and sharing. Using high-tech to no-tech tools, this ultimately helps with critical thinking skills and often a learner's sense of belonging, contributing and thriving.
The Portola High School Innovation Lab is located in the 500 building next to the Student Union, and it contains different machines and tools that can be used for design and innovation.
There are three ways learners may use this lab
With a class they are in
For example, freshman science classes have used the Innovation Lab for building aquaponics projects.
Teachers may e-mail Ms. Kern about a week ahead of time to reserve the lab for a class project.
On their own by appointment
Examples of this have been when members of the Science Olympiad Club have used the Innovation Lab's 3D printer to create a model for an upcoming competition.
The above video is of Rocketry Club members using the 3D Printer. Since the printer is portable, it was brought inside of the Learning Commons from the Innovation Lab. By doing this staff was able to manage the Learning Commons while helping with 3D printing questions. It also allows for staff to keep any eye on things like two hour long prints in case of any machine errors.
All individual appointment requests must be emailed to Ms. Kern at least one day ahead of when you would like to use the lab. Common courtesy is expected to be used in this process, like letting staff know if you have to cancel your appointment time.
On Friday Fun Days
These happen during Office Hours or Lunch when learners are invited to try a different activity each week coordinated by Learning Commons staff. Examples include candle making, vinyl sticker cutting, laser cutting, and much more! Make an appointment using the TeachMore app.
Watch @PortolaLibrary on Instagram for what will be offered each Friday.
about SUPPLIES
This lab is funded by family donations. Every August during learner registration, families are asked whether they want to make a donation for Tech and Innovation. Money from this collection is used to purchase such things as materials for the laser engraver, filament for the 3D printer, vinyl for the vinyl cutter, and wood.
Other supplies tend to be donated like yarn, pine cones, gently used T-shirts, and thread for the sewing machine. If you are thinking of donating any supplies, please email Ms. Kern first to see if there is a need for the item you are offering. If we do have a need for the item/s, then we can provide a tax donation letter upon request.
