Jon Resendez, a history teacher at Portola High School, has been named a California Council for the Social Studies (CCSS) Outstanding High School Teacher of the Year. This is a top honor that recognizes his exceptional contributions to social studies education.
Prestigious State Recognition
The CCSS Outstanding Teacher of the Year award recognizes only three educators in the state who foster civic engagement and a deep understanding of social studies among students.

Jon never hesitates to give his time, whether that means providing world class instruction to IUSD students, supporting initiatives like the development of our Ethnic Studies Course, collaborating with teachers at Portola High School or mentoring those new to the profession - his impact reaches far beyond the walls of his classroom. We are incredibly grateful for Jon’s leadership in Irvine Unified.”
Longstanding Leadership
This recognition underscores his profound impact on students and the wider educational community. With over 17 years of dedicated service within IUSD, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to his students and innovative teaching practices. His diverse roles have included serving as Department Chair at both Irvine High School and Portola High School.
Beyond his departmental leadership, Jon has served as an Education Technology and History/Social Sciences Literacy Mentor to assist teachers and staff with enhancing their instructional practices. He also serves on IUSD’s Ethnic Studies Steering Committee, lending his expertise to support the creation and implementation of the curriculum. Jon holds undergraduate and master's degrees in history and political science from Cal State University Fullerton.
